A General Affidavit is a sworn statement that is written under oath by the declarant, or person making the statement. The affidavit offers the declarant the opportunity to make statements under oath and in writing which adds to their credibility and truth.

The declarant has two options, they can either sign the affidavit when it is written or sign it in the presence of a solicitor or commissioner of oaths. An affidavit helps declarants prove that their statement is true and that it has been witnessed by another individual. Some cases in which an affidavit may be necessary are legal cases, loan or bank settlement, or other legal instances.
